Christine Norman is currently serving as the Owner’s Engineer for NextGen MURR, the University of Missouri’s initiative to build a 20 MW, state-of-the-art reactor to expand critical medical isotope research and production for cancer treatment and theranostics. Norman began the role in August 2024.
Professional and Academic Background
After graduating from the University of Missouri – Columbia in 2006, Norman started a career in nuclear power at Callaway Energy Center – Ameren Missouri. During her 17 years at Callaway Energy Center, Norman served in several technical roles supporting multiple departments.
Norman served as seasoned mechanical design engineer in the Design Bases Group at Callaway. In this role, Norman started out designing small to mid-range modifications, which included upgrading portions of our safety systems to be more erosion and corrosion resistant, in addition to heat exchanger, valve, and pump replacements. She became the owner of the piping and seismic design programs along the way. She also reconstructed the calculations evaluating the effects of postulated pipe breaks throughout every room and building at Callaway.
She eventually transitioned into the role of technical representative for larger projects, many of which had an emphasis on safety analysis and a large regulatory aspect. These projects involved designing and installing a water hammer mitigation subsystem, realigning the post-accident long term core cooling line-up, reanalyzing the safety-related forced draft cooling tower performance to regain operating margin, updating the heat removal calculation for the essential service water system to support flow balance and tube plugging limits, and performing a relief request and later a license amendment for the use of HDPE piping within a safety related building.
Norman also served Callaway in other technical roles, including supporting the Callaway Response to INPO IER (INPO Event Report) 11-1 Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Station Fuel Damage Caused by Earthquake and Tsunami. Norman has supported multiple Institute of Nuclear Power Operations (INPO) / World Association of Nuclear Operators (WANO) inspections that resulted in an INPO 1 rating. Her work has been the subject of numerous NRC audits and inspections with positive outcomes, lacking any meaningful findings.
Norman has been nominated for a NEI Top Industry Practice Award and has received the Ameren Presidential Performance Leadership award. Additionally, as a technical leader, Norman co-authored and presented multiple white papers which were used as a basis for developing the capital investment plan, responding to Requests for Additional Information (RAIs) from the NRC, navigating key refueling outage decisions, and supporting justification for continued operation when maintenance issues arose.
During her time at Callaway, Norman was a member of the Women in Nuclear organization in addition to the first North American Young Generation in Nuclear chapter.
